*Wagasa :
和傘とは竹、木、糸といった天然素材を使用した骨組に和紙を貼って作った傘の総称となります。
骨の数は３６本、４０本、４４本、４６本、４８本、５４本と傘の種類や用途によって変わりますが、骨の内側に和紙を細かく畳み込むために多くの傘骨が必要となります。 開いて傘、閉じて竹。傘をたたんだ時に一本の竹の姿に見えることが和傘の美しさの一つです。
和傘の種類には「番傘」「蛇の目傘」「日傘」「舞傘」などがあります。 傘骨に貼った和紙に植物性油を引き、防水したものは雨傘として使用され、雨傘の種類として「番傘」と「蛇の目傘」があります。
*Bangasa :
番傘の持ち手は竹のままを使用し、素竹の良さをいかしたシンプルで少し太めの和傘です。
番傘の名前の由来は諸説ありますが、 商家では店の者が使用し、大きな商店ではにわか雨のおりに貸すために屋号の印や、「子(ね)の十五番」などと番号を入れ、それが番傘とよばれたとも言われています。 また、１８世紀初めのころに大坂の大黒屋が大黒天の印を押して「大黒番傘」を売り出しました。
その後、印や判を入れた傘を「伴傘＝番傘」となったとも言われています。 これが江戸に伝えられ、丈夫で値段の安いことから庶民の間で大いに流行し，大黒屋傘の名で全国にひろまり、江戸に下って番傘とよばれました。
元来、紙が厚く、骨竹の削りが粗く、荏油(えのあぶら)を引いたもっとも安価な傘です。
