This hanging scroll is called "Kakejiku" in Japanese.
and high quality buddhist art.
A hanging scroll is one of the many traditional ways to display and exhibit East Asian painting and calligraphy.
This picture is a very famous Japanese buddhist monk "Shinran (May 21, 1173 - January 16, 1263)" who lived during the Kamakura Period.
During this period, "Shinran" taught the new nembutsu-only practice to many people.
"Shinran" was the founder of what ultimately became the "Jodo Shinshu" sect in Japan.
Now that "Jodo Shinshu" is considered the most widely practiced branch of Buddhism in Japan.
It is made by silk and paper.
There is aging deterioration.
