[Shisa] is a statue of a legendary beast that can be seen in Okinawa Prefecture.
They are placed on the gates and roofs of buildings and are meant to ward off evil spirits that bring disaster to homes, people, and villages.
It is said to be the Okinawan dialect pronunciation of "shishi" (shishi).
The one with an open mouth is male, and is placed on the right as you face it to invite good fortune.
It is said that a female Shisa with her mouth closed is placed on her left side to prevent any misfortune from entering the house.
