    Description

Thus lovely little ginger jar is a scarce example of Japanese cloisonne on porcelain, a technique that was extremely difficult to execute and which Japanese craftsmen produced in limited quantities during that nation's Meiji Period (1868-1912).  I would date this fine piece, with a design that features flowers and butterflies, to about 1900 or 1910.
The ginger jar measures a mere 4 inches high (including its lid) and 2 1/2 inches at its widest point.  After a close inspection, I noticed a few areas where the wirework has begun to lift slightly from the porcelain.  There is also some age related rubbing to the black paint at the top and bottom of the piece and a minor scuff to the surface enamel in one spot.  The jar is completely free of chips, cracks or repairs.
We are offering this scarce and beautiful example of Japanese cloisonne on porcelain with a low opening bid, in the expectation that it will achieve its appropriate value.
