    Description

Rare Japanese Edo Period (1603-1867) Tinder Starter (Box Lighter). This dates between 1680 & 1740 and is made of iron and brass with mixed metals (copper and brass) used for flowers decorating one side. Later pieces were made in all brass and used by higher ranking Samurai. The box was hung around the neck by a rope or chain or sometimes held in a pouch. It has a spring loaded lock with flintlock type hammer and striking plate. It was used as a lighter for fire starting or to light the match wick for a Tanegashima Rifle. It is in good condition, but could use a good cleaning. The spring does seem to be working, but when you pull back the hammer, it won't lock into place. Someone did take the brass top plate off to the mechanism at some point as it does come off (as shown in the pictures). It is probably an easy fix, but I don't want to fool with it, since I have no experience.
