    Description

A handmade Japanese villagers backpack. This was made to be used for collecting firewood in the forest. Firewood would be placed horizontally on the flat backpack
    opposite
the straps. Next, the long piece at the bottom, below where the arm straps end would pull up and around the wood where it would be tied to the top.
They made this with materials they had available. Primarily rice straw. There's silk and cotton cloth woven in along with what looks like plastic string or rope.
This was probably made in the mid 1900's, 1950's - 1960's.
Japan, especially the villages, was still coming out of the poverty of WW2. But their economy was starting to recover. Economically and culturally there was a big difference between life in the cities, and life in the countryside.
There still is actually, but not the huge
    differences
    in the post war time.
    It's 12 inches wide 36 inches long (31 x 91 cm) It weighs 3 1/2 pounds
