    Description

    A merchants documents tansu / in a ships tansu style, from Kyoto Japan.
    The last two photos show the date May 1907 (Meiji 40) This was a document box.
    There are six upper compartments in the two top drawers labeled with the kind of documents they were supposed to hold. Each compartment has a hole on the bottom so a finger could poke through and push the documents up.
    The labels state they're for property deeds, owners names and village names.
    The back has four rings in each corner we think  to attach to a backpack or horse saddle.
    This was a mobile office.
    The bottom drawer has the date and a village place name. The lock on the front door does not lock but slides back and forth to hold the door closed.
    It's 14 1/4 inches wide, 14 5/8 inches deep and 17 1.2 inches high. It weighs about 23 pounds.
