This is truly a noble and priceless pair of Japanese lacquerware trays made by a prominent Makie artist YOSHIDA Junichiro (1898~1969). He had been working as a topnotch Makie artist during late Taisho ~ mid Showa period (1924 ~ 1969). He won many honorable prizes throughout his life. The trays were made at least 50 years ago presumably 70+ years ago.
On the trays, traditional Japanese flower arrangement and Bonsai are depicted using very sophisticated Makie technique (photo #9 ~ 12). He signed at the back of the trays (photo #13 ~ 14).
These trays are originally made to be used at tea ceremony to serve foods / sweets. Of course, you can use it in any ways as you would like with your creativity. The trays themselves are extraordinarily wonderful artifacts for your collection.
They are stored in the original wooden (paulownia) box. The artist Junichiro drew "A pair of trays" on the surface of the lid and signed on its back (photo #5 & 16).
Both trays are in excellent vintage condition. Two virtually unnoticeable cracks could be found which developed at the locations where two wooden parts are jointed. One is at 8:00 o'clock of the large tray (photo #6), the other is at the same location of the small tray which is even difficult to find (photo #8).
