Kenkichi Tomimoto
1886-1963 Ceramic artist. Born in Ando Village, Heguri District, Osaka Prefecture (now Ando Town, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture). Raised in a family of prominent people in Nara, he learned painting from an early age. After entering Tokyo University of the Arts, he went to London to study architecture. After returning to Japan, he met Bernard Leach and became interested in ceramics, and began making Raku ware. After moving to Tokyo, he worked on white porcelain and blue and white porcelain, and in 1955 was recognized as a Living National Treasure for "colored porcelain." He pursued originality and produced many dazzling works, such as his own designs for "Moonlit Night in the Bamboo Grove," "Rapid Rain on the Yamato River," "Four-Petal Flower," and "Fern," as well as gold and silver coloring on colored porcelain. He died in 1963 at the age of 77.
