    Description

A Japanese wood carved shop sign from a warehouse that sold miso paste in Kyoto, Japan. This is a huge sign that would make an impression in a large establishment like a restaurant or business.
It's 39 inches tall (3 feet 3 inches) x 107 1/4 inches wide (3/4 Inches short of 9 feet long) It's 7/8 inch thick and weighs just over 50 pounds.
For size approximation, there's the coke can. The table it's sitting on is six feet long.
It's made of two pieces of either zelkova wood (keyaki) or chestnut. (They're similar in color and both are used extensively in Japan)  The first piece is very wide and goes from the bottom of the sign up 31 inches to just below the bottom of the red sun rays. From the front it's difficult to see this joint. It easier to see from the back especially in the last close up photo.
All the lettering is hand carved into the wood. The kanji writing and center logo in the center is carved, then coated with a black lacquer that acts as a primer for he final coat of gold lacquer. (makie) Makie is gold dust mixed with lacquer and painted on. Gold doesn't oxidise so it's always bright. The kanji black lettering on both sides is black lacquer. The red rising sun rays would also be lacquer.
The gold lettering in the center reads from the top, "Awa" a place in Tokushima where the miso is made. The center is the logo for the company and the largest kanji lettering under that says, "Miso".
The kanji on the left side  "Tokushima Awa Miso Company Limited"
The kanji on the right side  "Kyoto Tsukemono Company Limited"
So this sign states this miso was made from the parent company in Awa, Tokushima and sold from a warehouse in Kyoto.
We bought this from an antiques auction in Kyoto. The original business probably went out of business. This is a relatively contemporary sign made in the traditional style. The reading is left to right which means it was made after 1927.
The back originally had three thick wood braces dovetailed down the back to keep the sign straight. these braces were missing when we bought it.
Due to its size, this is a local pick up item from our warehouse in Alhambra.
