THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
The celluloid Charlie McCarthy wind-up toy was sold as The Gentleman Ventriloquist. That is what it said on the original box(which I do NOT have). The toy was not an authorized or licensed toy. Made in Japan circa 1938-1940. 1938 is the copyright year that you find on most Edgar Bergen/ Charlie McCarthy licensed Marx tin toys. This toy has the import/export stamp on the underside which is also indicative of pre-WW2 manufacturing in Japan. When wound the toy moves around while his mouth opens & closes. His arms swing freely. Working with key. Cane is original. Condition of the celluloid is outstanding. No chips, cracks, dents, repairs or touch up.
The only issue with toy's condition is the loss of white color on his tuxedo shirt. All 1930s Japanese celluloid starts out pink/flesh color & then paint is applied to create the appearance of clothing or facial features. The paint on this toy is superb especially the face, hair, eyes & open mouth(check out the teeth painted on the tongue). However for some reason the white shirt paint was very thin & you can see the pink underneath. Puzzling, as this is not an area of the toy that would be handled & show wear. The white gloves on his hands also has a very thin whitewash. Overall an outstanding example of this charming toy.
