    Description
    Seto Black Tea Bowl
    By Usuke Kato
It is one of the highest quality of his Setoguro works.
It is quite large, the same size as Setoguro in the Momoyama period.
It is a fairly faithful copy of the period.
There are very few similar pieces, and the tone of the glaze, the way the glaze shrinks as it is pulled out of the kiln and cooled rapidly, the mouth and the kouda are all very similar to the original.
If it were not for his signature on the back, it could be mistaken for a Momoyama period Seto guro in every respect.
    --Usuke Kato--
    1915-1981
The ancestor built a kiln in Akazu village in 1664, and it is said in the literature that it is a kiln that has continued for a long time.
He became skilled in pottery making as a young man and took over the kiln to further his training. His natural skill on the potter's wheel was known as the best in Seto. His early works were Oribe ware tea ceremony utensils, but he gradually broadened his style and studied Kosedo, one of the six oldest kilns, and produced works based on the Kosedo style. In 1960, he was commissioned by the Ministry of Education's Committee for the Protection of Cultural Properties to reproduce Kosedo chrysanthemum arabesque vases in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) style. He continued to study the traditional techniques of Seto and Mino, and changed his style by creating highly original works with an awareness of craftsmanship as an expression.
Among his works, the most highly regarded as the quintessence of Usuke's art was the Seto black tea bowls, which have been prized by the Sukiyu (tea ceremony) since ancient times. With his extreme technical skill and perfection, he revived Seto black tea bowls in the modern age as works that evoke beauty and joy with an elegance no less than that of the antiquity of the ancient tea bowls.
