Description:
Overview:
This is a Sigaraki-ware(*) Sake Flask made by a contemporary top-notch pottery artist KOHARA Yasuhiro (1954 ~) in Shigaraki, Japan. It is an excellent example of prominent Shigaraki-ware works. KOHARA intended this work is to be used
to enjoy Japanese Sake, and yet,
you can use it in any ways with your creative idea, e.g., as a small vase or a very extraordinal ornament.
*
Shigaraki-ware is a s
toneware,
which is made of a special clay (only available in Shigaraki area) and baked at very hig
h
temperature (1,200~1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use or apply any glaze at all before baking. The glaze is naturally formed in the kiln when certain conditions met during baking from ash of red pine tree and feldspar contained in the clay). Thus, it looks very natural and primitive.
Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony.
Yasuhiro has been very reputable not only in Japan but also in Western
countries
.
In fact, his works have been introduced and sold through many top-notch art galleries (e.g., Dai Ichi Art Gallery in New York) as well as auction sites (e.g., Christie's).
This sake flask is one of his best works with extremely mesmerizing texture.
The texture around the neck and body looks very natural, and yet complex, i.e., many different tastes and
looking
(photo #2 - 5).
The
green kiln jewelry
at the neck (photo #1 & 9)
was
naturally
(as explained above) formed in his kiln. Such a clear green kiln jewelry is very rare to develop.
You can see "
scratches
(photo #6)" as well as "crack-look-like lines (photo #7)". They are NOT flaws or blemish. They are a part of expressions by the artist Yasuhiro.
Indeed, this sake flask is very special and precious.
The sake flask is stored in the original wooden box (photo #11 & 12) . On the lid, he drew Tokkuri (徳利 in Japanese meaning sake flask) and sighed his first name Yasuhiro (康裕 in Japanese).

It is in perfect condition.
