ITEM DESCRIPTION & CONDITION
Karazi-Tatami are miniature tatami (traditional Japanese woven mats) that were used for the display of dolls or figurines. Pale, less age tanned places in the middle of each karazi-tatami show where an object was displayed
Manufactured by Lipper & Mann Creations (see labels), a company that set up in Japan after WWII and manufactured ceramic figurines, vases, and other decorative items for export.
Vintage, likely manufactured in the 1950s
Each karazi-tatami is made of woven grass or reed, in 3 different weaving styles. The are set in wooden frames with cloth on two edges.
2 Smaller Karazi-Tatami: wooden frames have some age-related discoloration, chips to finish, one has smear of red paint; cloth borders on 2 edges are plaid and show age-related discoloration; each has a different weave pattern, type of woven material is unknown, weave is tight without fraying; each has a sticker identifying the manufacturer as Lipper & Mann Creations
Larger Karazi-Tatami: wooden frame shows light age-related discoloration; cloth borders were originally dark red, but have faded to brown; weave is strong, with nor fraying, material is unknown
