Description
1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was in production from 1966 through 1997. The fourth generation of styling was introduced in 1978 and continued through 1988. The entire Cutlass line was downsized for 1978, including the Cutlass Supreme, and an upscale Cutlass Calais model that added additional trim and essentially replaced the previous Cutlass Salon series. The 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme had a similar appearance to the 1985 model year with a mildly updated grille with a 5x5 hole pattern in the sedan's upright egg-crate grille. Body styles included a coupe and sedan with base factory prices of ,700 for the coupe and ,880 for the sedan. The base V6 engine had overhead valves, a 231 cubic-inch displacement, four main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, sequential fuel injection, and delivered 110 horsepower at 3,800 RPM and 190 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 RPM. A three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission was standard.
Purchased by our consignor from his uncle, this Cutlass Supreme right out of 1986 has been in the consignor's family for the last 20 years. This car retains most of its original look, panels and interior, but has a fair amount of body filler throughout which is covering some underlying rust on the body. Trimmings are fairly shiny, and bumpers are still looking good. The original maroon is reserved for the interior and shows some fading of the upholstery and soiling. An unrestored engine bay and you could say we have a survivor on our hands in 1986 Olds form.
Exterior
Covered in a mostly original application of black, this 80's cruiser presents with severe dulling of the paint, a few areas of invasive rust and evidence of body filler in a few areas. A few other faults in the paint can be seen such as scratches, chip offs, spray in touch ups and runs in the finish. Also on the both rear quarter panels there is evidence of heavy body filler application and invasive rust in the lips. Stainless wheel arch moldings are on and we note moldings just below the beltline that have sections missing along the way. Polished US Mag 5 spoke wheels are wrapped by blackwall Cooper Cobra radials, P245/60R15's in the rear and slightly smaller P235/60R15's in the front. A large chromed exhaust tip peeks out from the passenger's side just behind the rear wheel. Most badging is present and accounted for and the filler panels while missing an emblem on the front are intact and crack free.
Interior
A swing of the door reveals maroon velour broadcloth sharing space with maroon vinyl for the swooping armrest. Chrome litters these panels in the form of Cutlass Supreme badges, window cranks, actuators, a joystick for the mirror and embellishments for the door pull. This car has front bucket seats with a fold down center armrest and a rear bench seat all in faded maroon velour tuck and roll broadcloth and smooth maroon vinyl edging. While faded these seats remain fairly clean and tear free. The factory steering wheel fronts the standard gauges layout with...count them...12 idiot lights to tell you of any impending doom. Noted is the mid 1980's square design dash, also in maroon but with plenty of faux woodgrain. Within these wood panels resides an aftermarket AM/FM radio with a cassette player, and the chrome slides for heating and AC. A tight maroon felted headliner hangs above and the lightly soiled maroon carpeting floats the whole interior.
Drivetrain
Within the unrestored and original engine bay lies the factory installed 307ci V8 topped with a 4bbl carburetor. A gaggle of hoses, wiring and ducting covers the majority of the engine as does a layer of dusting and patina. Bolted onto the back of the mill is a 200R4 4-speed automatic which sends power back to a 10 bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
Plenty of patina worn off undercoated surfaces are noted when up on our lift. Surface rust abounds throughout on the untreated components of the bottom side of this car, however the chassis and flooring remain structurally sound. Independent coil springs for the front, and a 4 link with coil springs for the rear suspension, also showing some surface rust along with power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear. A newer single exhaust system is seen installed.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and off to the test track where it performed well. Smooth acceleration, smooth shifting, and bias free braking on the panic stop. I noticed the speedometer was noisy while driving and there were various exhaust leaks but all else was performing like it should.
A surviving example not perfect but retaining its original nice lines and trimmings. Not a muscle car but a nice design with a great plush interior. A version in need of some TLC but all the fixings are there!
